It is based on the linear footage as well as the density, concentration, number of lights per linear foot that the supply has to feed. I wanted to replace existing under-cabinet halogens with led strip lights, controlled by an existing dimmer located across the room. The problem with all the other transformer units I found was that they had to be wired in this order: power -> transformer -> dimmer -> leds. To keep using my existing dimmer across the room, I needed to be able to wire it in the order: power -> dimmer -> transformer -> leds.
